Human Rights Commission of New Zealand
Every individual deserves the right to a suitable home. In Aotearoa New Zealand, housing stands out as one of the most pressing challenges facing the country. A significant portion of the population is grappling with issues related to housing rights, including overcrowding, unaffordability, substandard and unsafe living conditions, and a shortage of available housing. Recognizing this, the Human Rights Commission of New Zealand, Te Kāhui Tika Tangata (HRC), initiated an inquiry. The purpose is to comprehend people's housing experiences, develop solutions for the housing system, and advocate for the fundamental human right to a decent home.
Goal
The campaign presented a demanding challenge, requiring engagement from various segments of the public, ranging from those in the Housing Development sector to individuals renting overcrowded and unhealthy homes. Additionally, the strategy needed to be rooted in Te Tiriti o Waitangi, the agreement between our colonial government and indigenous Māori, necessitating a collaborative approach from the outset.
Approach
Collaborating with Tapu Tapu, we crafted an approachable brand infused with a unique local flair, rooted in Māoritanga, and designed to be accessible to everyone.
Solution
The result was a compelling website encouraging users to share their housing experiences, contributing valuable feedback to the inquiry, and generating content for continuous campaign promotion. Additionally, we devised a straightforward social media strategy, empowering HRC's small in-house team to inspire the audience to share their stories and actively promote the campaign.
